Naguib Mahfouz
|
Cairo, Egypt (Aljazeera): Naguib Mahfouz died on Wednesday at the age of 94, following a long battle against illness. Mahfouz, born in the Gamaliya quarter of Cairo in 1911, began writing at the age of 17. In his novels he gave the most vivid portrayal of life in the beautiful country, Egypt, and ancient Cairo. Mahfouz’s first published book was a translation of James Baikie's work on ancient Egypt, and his first collection of stories was published in 1938. The Literature Noble Prize Winner entered government bureaucracy, where he was employed for the next 35 years in 1939.
