Arabic-English literary translation star
|
Beirut, Lebanon (Star): Arabic-English literary translator Denys Johnson-Davies has done more than anyone to bring Middle Eastern literature to global audience. Midway through his newly published memoir, Denys Johnson-Davies recalls one of the frequent gatherings of young Egyptian authors he attended in the 1940s at the Cairo apartment of novelist and short-story writer Edwar al-Kharrat. On the evening in question, Johnson-Davies, then in his 20s and just beginning to make a name for himself as an Arabic-English literary translator, was suddenly confronted by another guest who turned to him and asked: "Who are you to choose what writers you translate?"
