Sergey Prokofiev Diaries 1907-1914
|
London, UK (Times): The first words in the first volume of Prokofiev’s diaries, beautifully translated by Anthony Phillips, are those written by the composer’s son Sviatoslav for the Russian edition. Filial adoration properly dictates that they present what follows as a significant literary achievement, not simply a day-to-day account of an extraordinary life. Great literary achievement or not — and not many diaries are — this instalment, begun while Prokofiev was still a 16-year-old schoolboy, shows an unaffectedly free, truly conversational style.
