Lack of linguists 'hampers fight against terrorism'

Edinburgh, Scotland (Scotsman): The decline in the number of school children and university students learning foreign languages is hampering Britain's fight against terrorism, intelligence chiefs have warned. GCHQ, the surveillance centre that listens in to millions of phone calls worldwide, has told a government review of language teaching that the shortage of qualified linguists poses a threat to its sensitive monitoring work.
