  South Africa: need for indigenous-language usage in courts
Cape Town, South Africa (IoL): "Notwithstanding our 12 years of democracy in the country, all our other languages do not exist in the courts. There's only English and Afrikaans." Judge Hlophe went on to cite several cases in which judicial prejudice against indigenous- language speakers was obvious. He made the comments this week in a speech on the need for indigenous-language usage in the courts, delivered at a conference at the University of Johannesburg on challenges to the justice system.
