Law aims to ensure no court discussion lost in translation
Florida, USA (DBNJ): The problem the state's court system has been ordered to solve is not asking judges to avoid using the expressions, but by training court interpreters to more accurately convey the meaning of the judges' words. Last spring, the state Legislature passed minimum standards for certification, discipline and training of court interpreters. The law was spurred in part by a botched interpretation in a Volusia County courtroom in 2004. Last December, a judge threw out the conviction of a 50-year-old Hispanic man after a national expert said the court interpreter provided an incomprehensible translation and wasn't fluent in Spanish.
