National Virtual Translation Center to expand
|
Washington, USA (FT): Lawmakers are currently negotiating a stop-gap spending measure for the remainder of fiscal 2007 that may fund most of Education’s programs at fiscal 2006 levels. Everette Jordan, director of the National Virtual Translation Center, said a major impediment to recruiting new linguists is the requirement that employees at the center be U.S. citizens. The center, which is housed in the FBI, was established in 2003 to provide translations of foreign intelligence for federal intelligence agencies. Jordan told lawmakers that lifting this requirement would open the field up to thousands of potential translators.
